Troubleshooting Synology NAS Issues for Client Company – On-Site Diagnosis & Support

We recently provided on-site support for a client company experiencing issues with their Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage). The client relies on their NAS for daily file sharing, backups, and internal documentation — so downtime wasn’t an option.

The Problem: NAS Became Unreachable

The client reported that their Synology NAS was no longer accessible via network, and users couldn’t open shared folders or access important business files. Some symptoms included:

  • NAS not showing up on the local network
  • Inability to access the web interface (DSM)
  • Slow or no response when pinging the NAS IP address
  • Random disconnection issues over the past few weeks

They contacted us for urgent network and NAS diagnosis to minimize business disruption.

The Root Cause

After isolating the issue, we found a combination of problems:

  • One of the LAN cables had intermittent connectivity due to a loose RJ45 crimp.
  • The DSM firmware had not been updated for over a year, which contributed to instability.

The Solution: Fixing and Securing the NAS

🛠️ Resolved IP conflict by assigning a static IP address to the NAS
🔌 Replaced the faulty LAN cable with a new Cat6 cable
🔄 Updated DSM to the latest stable firmware version
📁 Checked the RAID health and storage space
🔐 Verified backup tasks and enabled automatic alerts for hardware issues

Result: Fully Functional and Secure NAS Access

After the service, the Synology NAS was fully accessible, and users could resume file sharing and backup tasks with confidence. The client now benefits from:

  • Stable NAS availability across the network
  • Clear visibility of device status via email alerts
  • Enhanced network performance and reduced downtime risk

Why Synology NAS Maintenance Is Important

Like any network device, Synology NAS systems require regular checks to prevent downtime and data loss. Common issues include:

  • IP conflicts
  • Firmware bugs
  • Hardware failures (HDD/SSD)
  • Misconfigured network settings

By scheduling periodic maintenance, businesses can avoid costly disruptions and ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
